Typhon

Install Typhon.

tyc is a single binary: compiler, language server, formatter, REPL and interpreter. The Python it produces needs CPython 3.13 or newer and nothing else.

Latest release v1.0.0-beta.2, 4 October 2026

  1. 1

    Install the compiler

    Shell
    curl -fsSL https://typhon.sh/install.sh | sh
Scroll sideways if needed. Copy includes the full command.

The script picks the build for your machine, checks its SHA-256 and installs to ~/.local/bin, or %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Typhon on Windows. No sudo or admin rights needed. Running it again upgrades in place. You can read the script first.

  2. 2

    Start a project

    Shell
    tyc init hello
    cd hello

    This writes typhon.toml, src/main.ty with a worked example, and a tests/ directory.

  3. 3

    Check it

    Shell
    tyc check src/

Parses, resolves and type-checks without writing anything, which makes it the command to run in CI. Every error has a code; tyc explain nullable_use prints the full entry, offline.

  4. 4

    Run it, then build it

    Shell
    tyc run
    tyc build
    python build/main.py

tyc run executes straight away in tyc's own interpreter. tyc build writes plain Python to build/, with source maps so tracebacks point back at your .ty files. It also sets up a .venv with uv when uv is installed.

Platforms

Prebuilt binaries ship with every release.

Alpine and other musl distributions work under gcompat, or you can build from source.

Pin a version or folder

For macOS and Linux, pass flags after sh -s --. PowerShell uses the environment variables shown below.

macOS / Linux · shell
curl -fsSL https://typhon.sh/install.sh | sh -s -- --version=v1.0.0-beta.2
curl -fsSL https://typhon.sh/install.sh | sh -s -- --dir=/opt/typhon/bin

On Windows, set environment variables before running the installer.

Windows · PowerShell
$env:TYPHON_VERSION = 'v1.0.0-beta.2'
$env:TYPHON_INSTALL_DIR = 'C:\Tools\Typhon'

Download it yourself

If you'd rather not pipe a script into a shell, take the archive for your platform from the releases page, check it, and put tyc on your PATH.

Shell
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing # Linux
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing # macOS

Use the full releases list. GitHub's “latest” link skips pre-releases, and the betas are published as pre-releases.

Build from source

The toolchain is pinned to Rust 1.94 by rust-toolchain.toml.

Shell
git clone https://github.com/CodeHalwell/Typhon
cd Typhon/tyc
cargo build --release # target/release/tyc

Editor support

tyc lsp is a language server on stdio, so any editor with LSP support can use it for diagnostics, hover, go-to-definition and completion. There is a reference VS Code extension in editors/vscode. It isn't on the Marketplace yet, so install it from a packaged .vsix.

Uninstall

tyc writes nothing outside its install folder.

Shell
rm "$HOME/.local/bin/tyc"

On Windows, delete tyc.exe from %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Typhon. The install guide has a script that also tidies your PATH.

Next

The documentation has a ten-lesson Zero to Hero tour, the language reference and every diagnostic. What tyc checks is the short version.
